Things We Won'T Do Now
things we won’t do now
horse chestnuts bloom
across the road
white flowered steeples
bring dreams of autumn.
then i remember
you won’t be here
to make conkers.
baked a cake yesterday
double chocolate devil’s food
two layers popped
into the oven and i waited
ever so briefly, for you
to lick the spoon.
grocery shopped friday night
pushed the cart into the check out
automatically placed the tins
and boxes on the conveyor
missed the rain of candy bars.
some how it is i leaving
you sit in our past
watching calmly
like the dead in "our town".
