They Closed the Brothel Gates

They closed the Brothel gates
This were the sex workers fate
Her life paused a world refrains
Where are the folk who abstain
Are you thinking how they sustain.

Ngo’s step in to cater to their needs
No income in these narrow lanes
The walls now closing in as it contains
Mouth covered Kajal smarts her eyes as she stares
Haunting in her look as she habitually bares

Young girls playing and laughing at jokes
As the older woman wonder where are the menfolk
She stands in a low neck blouse
Well plucked eyebrows and a hint of blush
She dares bright red lips on it a hush.

Nicely penned. Very evocative of brothel life especially the tension between the older woman + the young girls. The quiet acceptance + late life flourish from the elderly woman lingers in the reader's mind. Well done. Brian
