These Tears I Cry

My heart aches with no reason why.
Though things are fine, these tears I cry.
Those I know don’t understand
and half the time I’m just like them.

I’ve searched and sought.
What holds me bound?
What weighs my heart?
What brings me down?

Perhaps it is a cry from he
who sits alone, worse off than me.
Who wishes life were at an end,
and could be saved by just one friend.

But he has none and so I hear
of his sad end with distant ear,
and though I go upon my way
inside a silent stone is placed.

And so it goes, day after day
until my soul so much doth weigh.

So, when you look into my eyes
and sadness see don’t be surprised.
These tears I cry and hold within…
will forever be the tears for him.

You've written very sympathetic verses on loneliness, Jeff. There are times when we just feel something is off kilter, and it brings us sadness. I appreciated your ending, to realize that no matter how sad we may feel, someone else is always further down in the abyss of sorrow. Nicely written.
