THERE WILL COME A DAY

Maybe I will never be happy again
Fall will never smell like it used to
The swing set will stay squeaky and rusty, and I will always be too tall
My feet will graze the mulch, and I kick my toes under it
As I have my fortune read
By the only other 4th grader on this side of the soccer field
I won’t marry a man named James
I won’t have three children and an orange cat
I will always be afraid of wasps
And feelings
And whispering
I will always be the kid who won’t swim in the ocean
Or read in front of the class
I will always look across the water to the happier kids
And long to be there as well
And think
“Maybe there will come a day where I will be with them”
Or perhaps I will stay on the shore
Still building my sandcastles
And trying not to think about happiness
And the stars fall and I never met him
And I think that’s what I’m really scared of.
