There are still stacks
of dirty dinner plates
that were not cleaned
from last night
and this is not
my best poem,
my son
reminds me,
that was a similar theme
from years ago
she was me
cleaning dishes at the sink
and hoping to see
a cardinal up close
before the moon
took over the sky
I need to feel
warm water
on my hands
because it calms
my restless soul
I need to feel
I will admire myself
and my mother
more than any man
ever will
At this time, every spring
new things are born,
everyday
that I will never know about
including the birds
that will sing next spring
during my runs I fit in
between my son's sports
events and lesson plans
that make a mockery
of life
Soap and water
make bubbles
on the glass dishes
and my wedding plates
are still my favorite
A bird, drawn by an artist
still makes me smile when I stack them
silently, after the sun went down
in her final colors
I smell tangerine
and lemon grass
in the diffuser
next to the sink
and Beethoven
hovers on apple music
between adagios
while I sway under
a cheap chandelier
I didn't pick
when we bought
this house
Hands are holding
dishes and dreams
while dancing
of better days
and cleaner
kitchens
