Then Came War
I saw her standing in the mist
Oh, this was long before we kissed
She was a child and so was I
But that changed slowly, bye and bye
The courtship seemed to last for years
We laughed and cried and dried our tears
We wed one June before the war
The time was short, the distance far
And then war came and I was gone
We knew our love would carry on
And so it did, but here I lie
All shot to hell as here I die
Don't bury me in blood soaked land
Take me to Texas' wind blown sand
She was my life - my life was good
Just carve those words on mesquite wood
