THE ZIA PATH

NEW BOOTS

WE DROVE IN YOUR BIG BLACK
TEXAS TRUCK
ALL NIGHT FOUR DIRECTIONS
NO DESTINATION
NO LONGER LOVERS
NO LONGER FRIENDS
TONGUES TIED
INTO A CHERRY KNOTS
NO WORDS TO SHARE
NO LONGER BOUND
TO THE ROAD WE WERE ONCE ON
NO LONGER HOLDING
EACH OTHERS' THOUGHTS
OR DREAMS OR HEARTS-

DRIVING WEST INTO THE
SUNBURN LIGHT
HIGHWAY 40 IS CLEAR
I'VE HUNG A CRUCIFIX
AROUND MY NECK
YOU NO LONGER THERE-
I LEFT A
SILVER EARING
BY THE BED
I ONLY NEED ONE
ON MY EAR
JUST MIXED, NOT MATCHED
SPARKLING IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR.
