The Years

If I could count the years
 they remind me
 how easily they catch us
 unawares
 of the passage time.

Yesterday a teenager
 then a young adult
 and suddenly
 midlife
 slipping quickly.

Today
 a senior citizen
 retiring
 yet still
looking back at the time passed.

Who counts the years
 wondering of tomorrow
 how soon
 they are gone
and we are left only to look back.
