I didn't know where this was going when I started with the title. The following is where it went:
The Year Was 1945
(now it's 2020)

The year was 1945 the greatest war was done.
When the calendar turned '46, I wasn't even one.
The world was torn asunder, the axis powers lost,
Was time to rebuild everyone, no matter what the cost.
The only flag left on earth, that could choose lead the way,
Was the one, containing stars and stripes, flown by the U.S.A.
We brought our wealth and power, to our enemies and friends,
Could have gone there as conquerors, would have led to different ends.
Fed other countries food and money, some were loans and some were free.
Were there to help them rebuild, better than they used to be
We could not watch them starving, had to lend a helping a hand.
If you weren't there to see it, then you may not understand.
As the other countries rebuilt, and could finally stand alone
They made decisions for themselves, that we did not condone.
We forgot that was the purpose, to let them find their place again
When they moved for independence, we saw their movement as a sin.
If you don't do, as we want you to, we'll take your funds away
That became the U.S. mantra, if they wanted us to play
We also made our preferences and outright trading bans
That made us what we are today, ugly Americans.
Helping other countries, helped our country make a coup
Grew our manufacturing and agriculture too
Made businesses international, with presence everywhere
Their owners got much richer, if they answered to the dare
Was all about the money, that caused them to decide.
Cheaper labor that was offshore, gave a better profit ride
Without the need for labor, did not need the brick or wood
If they were to be new billionaires, all this for them was good
Did not care about the U.S., the workers, and the facts
Sent extra bucks to Washington to get a lesser tax
The slogan that I've heard from them, in the country of the free
“The middle class should pay their share, and certainly not me”
Along came Trump in sixteen, although a billionaire
Ran for We the People, not for the money there
Ran to turn around the idea, Washington is only for the rich
Should be there for all citizens, was his patriotic pitch
Was not elected by the parties, but the people on his side
Was making giant steps forward, until the covid ride
Believed the dangers he was told, and shut the country down
Removing much of what he'd done, now was the devil come to town.
Trump never should have listened, at least that is my view
If the virus left tomorrow, they would think of something new
Impeachment did not work at all, non-cooperation failed,
Many of his swamp opponents, should be convicted, and then jailed
The year now 2020, voting time is coming soon
If it weren't for covid virus, we would now be in a boon
Played the Trump card last election, should again for this November
Should not go back to '45, to what we now remember.
