The Widow In Her Cabin, Part Iii
..But when he looked at her, sad as she was,
he knew he just couldn’t leave it because
she fired in him something way down deep,
entered his dreams when he lay down to sleep,
stirred in him something much deeper than lust.
“I wish I could help resolve all your woes,
I can’t, but I’ll still help you with these clothes.
It’s a small trouble to help you make coin,
perhaps the only one I can enjoin,
ease at least some of the burdens you know.”
She just raised an eybrow, said,“Did you hear?
I can’t have a man,”she said through a tear,
“Besides, you’re so young, don’t waste time dreaming.
there’s fine girls out there in need of courting.”
And yet the next day, once more, he appeared.
For a week she’d rail as they worked the suds,
to the point his stubbornness fired her blood,
but he kept on coming, scrubbing the clothes,
there in the waters of the hidden cove
until one gray day Joanne stepped back and stood
She stared down at him with an impressed look,
then the clothing from her body she took,
stunning Amos, he froze up and just stared,
she said, “Sometimes I like to bathe in there,”
while her fingers made a ‘come get me’ hook.
Amos half-stumbled pulling off his pants,
dove in after her, until both his hands,
felt sleekness of skin slide under their touch,
her fingers grasped him, it all seemed too much,
for a youth who was only just a man.
When they were finished, they laid on the beach,
the sweat still cooling on the breast of each,
she said,“I guess I did miss a man’s love…
so, was it all that you’ve been thinking of?
Or are your fantasies still out of reach?”
To answer he kissed her, leaving no doubt,
she seemed to sigh, and said,“None can find out.
I must be a fool, risking this much harm,
just to know the feel of some rake’s young arms,
but come now,and I will show you the house.”
Up a small path the two then made their way,
through a grownup field the path did not stray,
to a rough barn and a sad-looking house,
she said,“I’m embarssed by how it looks now.
It’s been years since anyone cut the hay.
“But that will be how you stay close to me,
work as my ‘farmhand,’ your cover, you see.
if anyone asks,in the barn you rest,
to maintain illusions, that will be best,
Even though,in truth,my bed you will keep.”
He smirked at all this,Joanne was no fool,
said,“Tending fields is a small price for you.
I’ll tell them I’m working for food and board,
so all of their gossip can be ignored,
and none can claim that your words are not true.”
