The Wheel That Never Stops
The Wheel That Never Stops
I've been caught for so long on the wheel of life that never stops
for a while now I've been shouting for help through this circle of smoke
someone get me down from this carousel of glass
for years I prayed to feel nothing at all
and if I had to feel, let it be in passing, like a thin wisp of smoke
as if I were running through the pages of a foreign book
and couldn't remember a single phrase that hurt
now I live on the edge of tomorrow while I'm still here
I sneeze before I smell any orange blossom
I cry in pain before I shatter the mirror on the wall
and I say goodbye to people before I've even met them
someone get me off this wheel, out of this heavy dream
who stole my sense of wonder, the one that kept burning in my palms
along with the worries I prayed to be rid of
who took my attachment to everything that passes quickly
and my devotion to everything that unravels along the way
who took my joy and gave it to a stranger
and gave my commitment away to whoever needed it
I wear my contentment now like someone else's coat
and I'm left as bare as a book without a single page
I'd just like to read a book and not know its ending
before I've even read the very first line of the story
even while I'm caught on this wheel that never stops turning
even while I'm devoted to this endless coming and going
and still I keep hoping to find a star with no map and no name
