The Weight of Water
I plunge in the water,
After my cousin pushed me.
The cold is biting through my bones.
I flap my arms and legs,
Trying to get used to the temperature.
But, I can’t swim.
There are weights attached to my feet,
Pulling me under the water.
I’m being pulled down by my thoughts that are too heavy to hold.
I try to stay up, and feel the raindrops start,
Piercing my skin as if they were needles.
The water swallows me, whole.
I’m trying to get up, but the current is too strong.
I look up, and see the world just as bright above me, untouched,
while I drift into the quiet, dark ocean.
Water fills up my lungs faster than it should,
And I am sinking too fast.
The light fades into a blur,
and the ocean keeps me.
