The voice

I was waiting for a bus earlier today
Winter frost bit my cheeks as just a way away
Came a fearsome shout
‘Officer armed with taser! Stop! Turn around!’
The man did not heed, did not stop
Of course not, and fairly soon he got got
Laying in the road as still as if he’d been shot
And as sorry as a sight it was to see such a plight
More fearful were the words that came from my right
‘Bloody Abdul, take your friends and go off back home’
The sprouting of a seed that should never have been sown
I turned my eyes smiling gladly
but shook my head sadly
And asked the voice what it knew
Of the man ‘what did he do?’
It answered not my words
But whatever it had heard
And told stories of hate and of a greater world
And placed the blame upon masses- ignorance unfurled
I settled in its position for a minute or two
And thought it best to bring a voice just a little less blue
‘There’s a lot to be said for kindness over lead’
‘Nonsense’ said the voice ‘it’s us or it’s them’
‘I think most everyone deserves whatever we can give’
‘Nonsense’ said the voice ‘find somewhere else to live’
‘And if our home was unfit then where would you live?’ I should have replied
But the fight that took flight in me had surely died
For I’d seen in its eyes, the depth of its despise
The words from my mouth reduced to hopeful lies
And warm hearts left destined to burn
At the stake of a mind that refuses to learn
