The Two Doors
If there were two doors in front of you
one leading to survival,
one leading to death
which would you choose?
It seems obvious.
Most people would choose survival,
wouldn’t they?
Only an idiot would choose the other door.
It’s like choosing between
a jam sandwich
and a sandwich covered in fish sauce.
Everyone would choose the jam.
No.
Some people prefer fish sauce.
Some cultures use it in almost everything.
Some people are allergic to jam.
Some hate the taste.
And sometimes
it depends on the jam.
If it’s strawberry,
I’ll take it.
If it’s grape,
I might take the fish sauce instead.
Suddenly,
the obvious answer
isn’t so obvious.
Maybe life is like that.
We don’t realize
that we are standing in front of doors
all the time.
Especially when life gets difficult.
We reach a point
where we have to decide
whether to keep going
or stop altogether.
Most people keep going.
Some can’t.
Not because they are weak,
not because they are foolish,
but because the road behind them
has become unbearable
and the road ahead
is impossible to see.
And sometimes
the answer changes.
Maybe they would keep walking
if they found someone they loved.
Maybe if they won the million dollars.
Maybe if they finally got the promotion.
Maybe if their life
just magically turned around.
Maybe all they need
is one reason
to believe the next door
might lead somewhere different.
There are so many questions in life
where the answer seems obvious.
But it never really is.
Because we are never standing
in the same room.
We never carry
the same weight.
We never see
the same doors.
And maybe that is why
there will never be
an answer that is obvious
to everyone.
Only answers
that make sense
from where you’re standing.
