The Things You Helped Me Unlearn
You didn’t ask me
to forget the past.
You didn’t pretend
the scars weren’t there.
You just stayed
long enough
for me to start
to unlearn.
Unlearn
that love means waiting
for the moment it turns cold.
Unlearn
that being chosen
is something temporary.
Unlearn
the habit of bracing myself
every time I speak
like my words might push you away.
You helped me unlearn
the way my heart learned
to apologize for existing.
Because you love me
in ways that feel steady.
Not loud promises
that disappear tomorrow.
Just quiet proof
over and over again.
You wake up
and choose me.
And somehow
that simple thing
is rewriting everything
I thought I knew about love.
You help me unlearn
the idea
that I have to shrink
to be loved.
You help me unlearn
the fear
that every good thing
is about to end.
And slowly
my heart is learning
new things too.
Learning that love
can feel safe.
Learning that I don’t have to run.
Learning that sometimes
the right person
doesn’t just love you—
they stay
long enough
to help you unlearn
all the ways
you thought you didn’t deserve it.
