The Sounds of Silence

I’m in love with the silence. The thick layers appear They display as opaque But they are easily pierced A small adjustment Metal appliances click The wood cringes The cloth swishes But still it envelops All spaces it spreads to Filling up the room Also In its company Breath moves along The sleeping human The snoring dog It waves with silence It is the drumbeat It differentiates life From the quiet of death It rises and falls Not far past the body But silence goes further Beyond the arm Beyond the lung It scatters like sand It saturates like water Dammed by sound Displaced as darkness When light turns on. The noisemakers stir The sun lights the ground Silence retreats now I wave it off resistant But knowing it will return
