The Sole Egret

The sole Egret
White against the dark marshes
On the way to school
Wet in the drizzle
Yet present each morning

It had missed the migration
So each day as we passed
My daughter Zahra would exclaim
Dad, here she is!

We had lost count until the day
It left perhaps for good
Perhaps for ill, who would know?
That morning we saw an Eagle

It was nesting nearby
Somehow I suspect
Our sole Egret didn’t migrate
You know how these things go
An Eagle chick must eat
