The Siren's Song

One foot in front of the other
Down the straight and narrow I must go
To complete my aimless wander through this world

But I see her in the distance
A sight all too familiar
She begins but as a speck of light that grows as she nears

I once worshipped the air she danced on
and in return, a light caress across my face
Wisps that escaped from the wind underneath her feet

She whispers sweet words in my ear
Promises of a new beginning
A second chance
or a third, fourth, fifth
Maybe this was the right time

But first i must dedicate myself to her
Worship as a disciple of her doctrine
Pray to her of a covenant
All consuming

But she has never kept up her end of the deal
I have never felt the heat of her body
Only the fleeting warmth of scattered rays

But I was so close once
I smelt the honey on her breath
The flowers that grew from her beads of sweat

Her playful cadence tugged at my heartstrings
perhaps too hard
She was taunting me
This time, in hopes that I would follow her off my path once again

When I withdrew my body, a denial of her presence
She ran from me
In an expectant chase
down a path I could not follow
Well…
would not.

For I have fallen for her song and dance before
A siren she was
I had almost drowned myself in currents swollen with false promises

I stood firm
Face forward, away from her light
and began my militant march toward the nothingness
For I would rather face the barren earth than undergo her recurring torture

Oh Love, how you’ve slipped from my grasp
I’ve let you go this time
At least that’s what I choose to believe
As I walk the straight and narrow
