The Saddest Place on Earth

When you think of places that are sad,
you might think of the Germans in Stalingrad,
or you may consider, too,
Napolean, leading the French, at Waterloo,
but, by far, the saddest place around,
for a hundred years, is Mudville town,
the place where Casey at the bat
failed, as his mighty swing fell flat.

Casey made excuses. Folks said, "Save your breath",
and mighty Casey drank himself to death.
Flowers in Mudville, they say, never bloom.
Children grow up in misery and gloom.

Yet, as all hope is disappearing,
lately, I have been hearing,
about a strapping young prospect,
the one standing there on deck.

Do you think he can make Mudville smile?
Will he strike out or hit the ball a mile?

That poem 'Casey at the Bat' brings back wonderful memories for me. My speech and drama teacher used to recite that poem to us, and I never heard it told so well, it makes me really miss him! I'm going to pull it up on Youtube for old time sake. I really like your poem, and I don't know, maybe someone could plant some grass seed over the mud in Mudville and make a nice baseball field. Baseball makes everyone smile!

Good one, David. I remember "Casey At The Bat". One poem that would appeal to little boys who might, just might learn to love poetry. I enjoyed reading this one. Way to go. 👏✍️. Sara K.

Thanks, Sara! When my son was in second grade, I dressed up in a baseball uniform and read "Casey at the Bat" to my son's second grade class. I think that would have been in the year 2000.

I like the rescue job at the end of this one, David... and surely you're right about Casey in Mudville being far sadder than any trifling event of WW2. lol. ~ gw

This is such a clever and entertaining spin on the classic tale of Mudville! I absolutely love the humorous exaggeration of comparing Casey's strikeout to historical defeats like Stalingrad and Waterloo. Your rhymes carry the story with a great, steady rhythm, and that cliffhanger ending perfectly captures the eternal, suspenseful hope of baseball fans. Brilliant and fun read!⚾️🧢

Thanks, what a nice review! I reread it and replaced sort of a malaprop (now it says save your breath instead of hold your breath), and also, your comment makes me realize I should check "hyperbole" as one of the tags for this poem.

Thanks, Dorothy! It's kind of a continuation, or maybe a tribute to the Casey at the Bat poem.
