The Right To Retaliate

The right to retaliate.

Is this a human right
Or wrong? Hurt me,
I suffer. This is not
a shared experience.

Knowing pain and anguish,
Being human,
Can I inflict
The same on you?

Can I fight your hate with love?
Can I hold you close
until your heart melts
And sees my world?

The wounds are deep,
I am scarred, and
Bear the marks of your hate.
Can my hate be turned to love?

Hate and evil
Lie side by side
Love and good
Have no bed.

Hate and evil
Comfort each
Other with
Might and right.

Love and good
Rest in the heart
Of humanity
And the meek shall inherit the earth.
