["The Return of Faith" was written in the mid-1960s and first appeared in a journal of the American Baptist Publication Society; it was reprinted in "The Lady in the Pink Hat," Candor Press, 1969.]

The crisis swoops down Like a broad-winged bird Soars in upon me, it seems To enclose my future and dreams. The phantom of dread Enters my darkened future And intrudes on all my hope Leaves me in darkness to grope. Then like a giant crane The wings unfold and lift And once again I can see Ahead, and faith returns to me.
