The Republican
The republican
Oh lord I know you hear me
As I sit here in my cell
Tomorrow they will take my life
Please give me the courage to die well
Myself and my 3 comrades
Were found guilty by our own
For we wanted a united Ireland
Not leave six counties to stand alone
Oh, dear mother as I write this
Please don’t worry or shed tears
Though tomorrow I must leave you
After only 18 years
We fought for a united Ireland
And if our lives must be the price
I would pay it ten times over
Wouldn’t need to think about it twice
There is much that I am proud of
And regrets there are some too
I will have no wife to call my own
Or children to bring to you
But mother dear my biggest regret is
I will not see you before I leave
A chance to give you one last hug
As I know you’ll surely grieve
the so-called leaders on this Island
seems have gone and made a deal
to give away six counties
it’s not just sad, it sounds unreal
for those who fought for freedom
for eight hundred years or more
must be turning in their graves right now
wondering what did we die for
Republican is what they call us
Republicans we will die
but Ireland it has 32 counties
on this there can be no lie
united is how we started
united is all we'll take
for Ireland is our country
not to be divided up like cake
