The Redundant Dream

When I had something to say,
I simply stopped
and listened instead.
My four-year-old students
all saw whales
in their imagination.

"I saw two!"
"I swam with three!"
Competition
was surer than truth.

Greater men,
and women
use words better
than my hollow phrases
of striving meaning.

I look for new colors
when Monet already
claimed them all.

Great readers decipher words,
like onomatopoeia.

Thinkers hear the songs
when silence
offers space for sound,
like 'The Sound of Silence'
by Simon and Garfunkel.

Anthony Hopkins
Is one worth listening to
when language isn't enough.

Everything Anthony says resonates
new meaning and coloration
through never-tired narration.

I once loved ‘Legends
of the Fall’ because
life was too obscure for me.
I wanted passion,
and complexity,
when I was seventeen,
and constantly
trying to breathe fresh life
through a wet hand towel
that I held
over my face in a tub,
while the water boiled
in a pot downstairs.

“To live, to live
would be a great adventure”
Robin Williams offers us
in ‘Hook’.

Other lines resonate
with the same wooden
honesty, and engravement.

Stir the noodles with a ladle
while you think, Jennifer.

“Samuel was a soldier,
and soldiers die!”
“Blast you!” Hopkins
shatters me, and
blocks his eldest
from view like a sun
too strong
for view.
