The Red Summer Rose
The red summer rose waves softly in the wind
youth is strength and her petals hold together
Bloomed yesterday with a cheery red that smiles
and the morning dew tickles and trickles down her stem
courting butterflies and bees with a fragrance pure
hummingbirds wing hovering to embrace her nectar
The brilliance of sunlight makes her sparkle and shine
her deep red hue bursting with radiance of crimson glory
As the lush glow of moonlight kisses the rose as she
emits a glow of blood red rich and dark as the night's shade.
Water the rose bush with a good soak as the summer heat
can feel sharp with teeth that burn the green into a dusty brown
Summer's days are long and it's heat strong with a quiet still
red red rose you fade with age is your youth evaporates into the sun
the brilliant red color rust into an auburn crisp at the petals edge
The red summer rose wilts no more butterflies or bees as her nectar dries
a brisk hot wind rips her petals away one by one they go
Beauty once pleasing faded and gone, colors so fresh are pale
next year will bring again the red summer rose
I plant next to it a rose bush of white with hope a new year can bring.
