The Rebel

standing alone in the eye of the storm,
       he doesn't care that he's seen
                  as an iconoclast.

      not afraid to defy conventions.
       a non-conformist to the core;
     strong sense of independence,
          zags when everyone zigs,
               leads, never follows.
                  he stands alone;
                       marches to
                          different
                             drum

A striking concrete poem: its narrowing, staggered shape visually enacts the rebel’s solitary, defiant stance, culminating neatly in the “different / drum.” The spare phrasing and forward momentum give the tribute both courage and conviction. Congratulations on your contest placement ❤️

Gosh, I could exactly resonate word by word and line by line with this one, dear Edward! I've been feeling this way, and so much more lately, life is ironic.. but well, the one who is destined to lead is always the one to stand alone, forever.. it can be emotionally challenging for some, like me, the way I've been feeling abt it. But maybe it's all for the best! Lol apologies if I rambled too much, but my soul could connect with this poem! And what a creative one too! A kimo + nonet! How interesting! "standing alone in the eye of the storm" that opening is enough to send shivers! "zags when everyone zigs, leads, never follows." I love that zig-zag line! Such clever wordplay! Enjoyed reading you today, hope the weekend has been treating you well, sending best wishes 🧚 🧚 🍁 💫 ⭐ 🌙 A fave ~
