The Real Soul

Not a seeker, I, but as a visitor
may choose the pathway which the
light reveals, and watch as all
      my questions disappear as though
      they never were.

Yes, there are answers as I meditate,
not in sudden flashes, but in stealth,
delicious dawning on a thinner mind,
      sleep-deprived perhaps, awake just
from a quietness that speaks without
      a voice, "I am a soul! I cannot die"
and on the day my body lies bereft of
breath, doubt too is gone. It is for
me to join in that exultant ode with
      my new classmates filing in.

      There is change indeed, matriculation
in a spirit life now unencumbered
with a body less my own each day, but
soaring with the larks of every age
who make a festival of time.

I am soul! The miraculous creed
of every man, the one pure offering
he may present to every God, to
every truth he knows, and in its
      reciprocity, the life eternal that
      will crown his days.
