The Purple Hearted

He may have joined the Marines...
because of a sense of patriotism and duty.
Running deep in the fabric of familial DNA...
Maybe it was the only means of escape
from generational poverty -drugs and gangs
...none but the newly purple-hearted can really say.

but when I look at the awkward air
where there once was a limb:
I can say for certain that he earned his freedom
more than most of us did.

My heart stopped beating for a moment after reading this one, Anthony. A story that needs/needed to be told. Thanks, gw
