The Promise

STANDING IN THE DOORWAY
NEWSPAPER IN HAND
SHE ASKED, "HAVE YOU HEARD?"
AND I KNEW
BEFORE THE WORDS
EVER LEFT HER LIPS
THAT HE WAS GONE.

BROKEN
I COLLAPSED
NOT ABLE TO BREATHE
NOT ABLE TO COMPREHEND
MY LIFE
WITHOUT HIM.

STANDING BESIDE HIM
FOR THE LAST TIME
AS HE LAY
IN STILLNESS
I REALIZED
I'D NEVER TOLD HIM.
OH, HE KNEW
BUT WHAT TERRIBLE REGRET
TO HAVE NEVER SPOKEN
THE WORDS.
AND, IN THAT MOMENT
THE PROMISE WAS MADE,
IF I EVER
LOVED AGAIN.
