Notes About The Poem

The Power of Fiction contest by Natasha L Scragg

The Power of Fiction

You will discover how my keen mind works
Through books I’ve read, or rather, through their quirks.

I leap into unknown as pages turn,
As chapters fly I find where I belong.
To fight and win the hero’s wars I yearn
While my adventures move the plot along.

I roam through distant worlds in every book,
I delve into the author’s shared insight.
I’m Tom, I’m Robinson, I’m Captain Hook,
An English orphan, a Round Table Knight.

I taste survival grip in Love of Life,
My Gatsby’s in pursuit of a green light,
Edmond Dantes’ obsessive revenge drive -
His vengeance burns until the wrongs are right.

Can’t help falling in love with Princess Bride,
I wear an Iron Mask - my grand disguise,
With loyal Dr. Watson by my side,
I’m charismatic Bond, spy of all spies.

I laugh out loud at cantankerous Grinch
Who holds angelic villagers in fear,
Bet beloved Dr. Seuss didn’t flinch
At placing Grinch’s sneer against Christmas cheer.

As pages turn into unknown I leap -
The realm I enter is mine to keep.

Margarita, I love the way your entry captures the best part of reading. To be taken to the scene and becoming the character. How many roles our imaginations can give us, how many powers or personalities. You always know the author has done a perfect job when you and character become one. I love the fun and adventurous feel to this write. Congrats on your placement and thank you for entering the contest. ✍️✨️

Your rhyming couplets frame the quatrains beautifully, echoing the turning pages and the reader’s leap into imagined worlds. The lively parade of literary characters celebrates fiction’s power to let us inhabit other lives, while the closing lines make those adventures feel lasting and deeply personal. Congratulations on your podium win❤️

The commenter below me is suspicious. I clicked on the name, and she/he is there but no poems are listed. I bet others have received the same message; first line is obviously off .... We must keep our eyes out. (I guess I'm sleepy because my last line came with imagery that made me giggle.)

Beautifully done! I know & have spent time with each referenced character. If your love of reading started as mine, you first lived in a boxcar that was exchanged for a little house on the prairie that you had to leave when you became a detective named Nancy and soon you were claimed by Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy. Forgive me, I'm indulging myself - letting the above 'spill' was great fun. I feel pretty sure you relate and probably, hopefully, enjoyed what I wrote. I embrace your contest entry!
