The Pledge of Allegiance

Now, why a meeting of adults
Should open with the pledge
Is something that feels wrong to me
And sets my teeth on edge.

As children, we recited it
Assembly days in school
And when I taught, each morning
In the classroom was the rule.

Just like the anthem, kids should learn
The words that we recite
On those occasions when it is
Appropriate and right.

To me, a meeting of the board
Where I retain a home
Is not one of those times and that’s
The reason for this poem.

are you ok with it done at school though? It makes me kind of sad that kids today are not learning anything at all by heart, much less our national pledge.

I do think kids should learn it, although I’m not sure it needs to be recited every day. I feel the same way about “The Star Spangled Banner.” It’s our anthem and every American child should know the words to it. When it’s sung at ball games, you can tell how many people are faking it…

Ha! That’s the best solution, Jan. When I taught, I occasionally had the rare child who refused to recite it and I accepted that but asked him to stand up to show some respect. I don’t see many occasions when adults should have to recite it, though…

The Proud Boys cocked their guns at a town meeting, I think I'll take the pledge over the guns. Great piece, Ilene

I’d be afraid that they would cock their guns to force people to say the pledge, which is a much scarier situation all around…
