The Orderly

invisible
in a world
where rank
is everything
he’s reminded of it
every day

reminded he belongs
at the bottom rung
of the ladder
he doesn’t get a say
seldom a smile
or acknowledgment

he feels rejected
looking the wrong way

he’s reminded
each day
it’s the patients
who appreciate
a kindness
a word
a smile
and return in kind
