The One Left Behind

Every day we hear of the hero
The valiant one
He who holds honor and duty above all
The protector of the innocent
The defender of freedom

We rearly hear of the one left behind
The empty days that never end
The echo of one solitary voice
She faces the darkness of night
With not but a memory to comfort her

She wears a smile on her face
To hide her icy tears
She must steady her voice when she speaks,
For the children she will giggle and play
She is the protector of their fragile world

When the day ends and most drift into dreams
She falls to her knees and whispers a prayer
"Lord forgive my bitterness and grant me strength,
Show me the way through another night,
Protect my hero and let his mission always be in your name."

As she lays awake through the night in her heart she now knows
She is alone in her pain and fears
He is hero to so many
He protects the innocent and oppressed
And she will forever be
The one left behind.
