The Old Elephant
How great is the elephant!
A huge beast older than the forest?
The crevice of prolonged emotion!
The fear scattered on every hill:
A red shell of paint used to paint
On the rock of every beast?
Wars loudly shout above the sea
To strain the peace of lulling seasons:
How dares any to stoop for peace
When the old emotion wreaks on
The hardening flesh of a gentle nation?
In vain, in vain, you stoop in vain!
How great is the elephant!
Who can batter an ancient beast:
Never kill our gentle beast!
Never ruin an innocent beast!
History is unscared of the foul elephant
She starts the rites of our violent ingenuity.
