The odd one always out

I’m the ghost at every table
I’m the odd one always out
If I fell down three stories
I don’t know who would shout
the one you just can’t joke with
the one you just can’t figure out
always on edge about something, always with an air of doubt

He who once had so much promise,
first place in all the town
who painted his own misfortune,
he lost his gleaming crown.

I know shame like an old friend;
the good always has an end
a broken promise, too much to mend
regret drives me around the bend.

Compliments about my face, my hair, my look and my good lace
are really all I want to chase
The hours work that I’ve put in, they may as well be ‘moved to bin’
because lust is all I want to win
when in truth, I’m not worth noticing.

When I tell jokes they don’t quite land
silence takes me by the hand
as they look, no smile on face
at someone completely out of place.

So I’ll be polite and I’ll agree
so that they cannot really see
that all I want with all my might, is to be thought of,
to be liked.
The nervous holding of myself
I wish I could put it on the shelf
believe me, I’ve tried to drop the mask
proven to be too tough a task
for someone so feeble, so lost and unsure
If anyone would answer
if I knocked at their door.
