Notes About The Poem

1/11/2026 for Some Kind of Mystery Poetry Contest sponsored by Nette Onclaud

The Mysterious Sky

In a sleeping bag, ten years old was I,
under the Mojave desert sky
next to the Sierra mountains.
I could hear fresh water fountains,
and the sound of a gentle breeze
blowing the leaves of aspen trees.
I pondered the mystery, "why we are".
The sky answered with a shooting star.

David, this is a very appealing, expressive piece. Great use of personification at the end! Janice

Hello David, I really enjoyed the quiet wonder in this piece. The childhood perspective, the Mojave night, the aspen leaves, and that final shooting star all come together with a beautiful sense of innocence and awe. A gentle, memorable read. Winter Blessings, David, Daniel

Hi Daniel! Thanks, yep this one is an entirely true story, except that the question I asked was maybe a little more vague, but definitely there was a sense of wonder and awe. Camping and nature sure do that.
