The Missing
A ringing phone,
stills my heart.
it's the school,
on the line.
What do you mean missing?
Gone where?
Who with?
How long?
Speeding trip down the road.
Tires barely touching pavement.
Trying to remember
What color shirt did she have?
Which shoes? Pants?
Fear paralyzes my heart.
Dread fills my soul.
Where did she go?
Who is she with?
What if she's hurt?
A daily commute,
normally so near,
now seems like
a never ending journey.
My heart beats faster
the closer I get,
arrival,
slam the car door,
run inside,
ultimate relief...
she is found.
Hugs and kisses all around,
overflowing with tears,
we were the lucky ones.
