The Miser's Burial

The Miser’s Burial

By Elton Camp

Robert’s been a miser all his life
To spend always brings him strife

Desperate measures he will take
To save money for its own sake

He drives about in a scruffy old car
But then, he never goes very far

His dwelling is a run-down shack
A few feet from the railroad track

The grocery store he does amaze
He comes, not to buy, but to graze

Any samples that are on display
Disappear to the manager’s dismay

To save, Robert decided to try
In the event that he should die

Learning the cost of a burial plot,
In horror, he said, “I think not!”

But then the miser smiled with glee
“Standing up, there’s room for three!”

“A third of the plot for me will do
Possibly, I can sell the other two.”

He can’t take it with him when he dies,
But it wouldn’t be surprising if he tries

Another well constructed poem, I had a feeling of Dickens reading this one. Old Scrooge and tis the season and all that. Great work.

This was inspired by an actual person of my acquaintance. He's the most stingy person I've ever known, but it has paid off for him in a way. He has a great deal of money saved even if he has lived the life of a pauper. Someday his heirs will be made very happy!
