The Masks We Choose

Love and hate know no gender; They wear the masks that people choose, Not the ones they are born with. The best partner doesn't exist, nor ever will. It is not about finding the best, but finding one who is worthy. The one who protects your name in silence, raises it in public. Hate was said to be felt, Men were said to hide their hearts, While women wore theirs bare. Love was said to be feigned; Yet some veil it, And others wear it openly. Culture's truths are not always humanity's truths. Hate is a burden that takes away a person's peace. Once lost, it cannot be regained. Hate is the punishment of remembering that person. Love is life's bittersweet cycle, Once we start riding it, And the further we go, Its weight grows heavier. Then comes a time where guilt takes root, Distance grows, And communication fades, All that remains is blame and pain, No remedy comes with ease. When silence and misunderstanding take hold, Even the strongest house surrenders to ashes and dust. At last, we're told to avoid it, But avoiding it isn't an option, As it leads to a path that destroys a person's spirit; While leaving only the shell of who they once were. For in the end, Neither love nor hate belongs to man or woman; Only to the hearts that choose to carry them.
