This song is an adaptation of my poem The Manic Phases written in 1985.

It's from a period of my life when I was struggling to compartmentalize my feelings so I could cope. I was dealing with a mentally ill mother who constantly made it harder for me to succeed as I was breaking free from her.

And at the time given the turmoil inside me I felt crazy.  Its all long past.

[verse] Sometimes I am a shadow Casting images upon a wall Having no effect on life A curiosity to all Sometimes I am a rock Moved by others pain at times like this I wonder at the thought That I am insane Sometimes I am an animal Drifting along at whim Doing things without a thought Of love of life or limb at times you think you know me at times you know you don’t just remember I am all me even when I won’t the manic phases [pre-chorus] my life has been an adventure survived by intellect My drive has kept me going when I felt bereft There is nothing like the doubters to pull you down again as you pick yourself up and dust your butt off to try again [epic guitar solo] [chorus] Nothing goes right the first time or its rare in my experience but if you keep trying you can conquer all being down is a delirium That private pain is your prison you can walk free from with your own key just seek help from the outside to unlock your own inner being [verse] I started out a shadow Casting images upon a wall Having no effect on life A curiosity to all I started out a rock! Moved by others pain At times like this I wondered at the thought That I was insane Sometimes I was an animal Drifting along at whim Doing things without a thought Of love of life or limb At times you think you know me! At times you know you don’t Just remember I am all me Even when I won’t The manic phases shadow rock animal a curiosity to all do you see me now [music fades] [end]
