the love of my life

the love of my life

Someone had put a puppy dog down a hole and
tied her to a string around a stone
I went to her house, but she was terrified, never having
met kindness
At home, I put her on the kitchen floor, quickly
She ran into the darkness there, but refused
to come out, I put food and water near her
and left the kitchen
In the morning, she had drunk the water and
eaten the food and peed, but she refused to
come out
I had breakfast of fried eggs and bacon
speaking softly, not using my gruff voice, but
She was so traumatized and stayed put
in the evening when watching the news,
I had left the kitchen door open in case she
wanted to come out
Engrossed by the news about murder and
Mayhem, I felt a slight pressure on my left
foot, she had gone asleep there, and I didn't
dare to move
Finally, I lifted her up into my arms, where
She slept soundly; ok, so I cried
Thirteen years together, she only hated me
when she needed a bath.
