Notes About The Poem

Craig's Lonely Weed Contest ~ 3/15/26

The Lonely Weed

I've no memory of my beginning,
A tiny seed, a lowly abandoned weed
Taken for a ride on Mariah's breath

Safe harbor found on a wall,
I barely squeezed between the bricks
and rested there for a while
In the silence of loneliness, I dwelled

No others like me did I see
as I buried myself inside a crevice
Leaves like arms in shades of green
I budded like a wildflower
Despite the odds I survived

I'll be doomed to a lonely life
without a flowery mate...
a lonely weed, never to procreate

A memory ~ I recall being a wispy seed,
with fuzzy siblings at my side
When our white-haired mother withered,
she sent us off without a goodbye
to live or die on our own.

I came to congratulate you; however, after reading my enthusiasm faded, I traded it for a new reaction: she should have been placed higher! STILL, all is well, you rock and all know it

Tania, the contest is trivial compared to injustices taking place like the one you’re referring to. The use of AI and plagiarizing continues by that one.

You might be interested to know that Craig must’ve read my response to you and has some how redone his contest judging. He has removed my placement form his list. I couldn’t care less. It only shows his true petty character.

Dear CayCay, several poets I admire like I do you have expressed the same thoughts you have graciously stated. After reading the others I have to agree. No more will I enter Craig’s contests. I have lots more to say but I’ll only say one of his top placements makes no sense and another was a knockoff on something she posted a few years earlier. I appreciate your honesty and your support. Hugs.

Hi Lin....this is one of the best "lonely weed" themed entries that I've come across so far. Very good personification, though I assume it could also have been intended as a metaphor. ~ Best regards // paul

Dear Paul, it’s so nice to see you and even better to read your kind comments. Whether it places or not, I’m grateful you found it to your liking. Supportive comments from poets I admire are worth far more. I hope you’re well and happy. Hugs!

I agree with John below Lin, your poem is a super personification on the life of a lonely weed, although nothing lonely about the ones coming up between my cobbled lock drive lol, still your poem has managed to evoke a little sympathy within me for the blighters, so well written it is; Oh ok dammit I’ll hold off till after st Patrick’s day before I get the weed flamethrower thing out of the shed, I’m a big softie lol! Cheers David

Ha David. I know of your tender heart when it needs to be exposed, but I also know it will not give an inch when you're in protective mode... or in your clever way of exposing... let's just say 'what needs to be uncovered." My ex was particular about his zoysia lawn and if there were any dandelions growing in sidewalk cracks or in his precious grass, I'd go out and snip the flowers and put them in a little vase on the dinner table. I got the side eye look, but I met it with a smile. Flamethrower! Sounds like you need a bonfire! How kind that you'll give them a 2 day grace period. Patrick would be so proud. Merci for your sympathy and great comments. ;-)

A very well done bit of personification here Lin. with a tinge of metaphoric melancholy

Thanks, John. I thought of Wordsworth's, "Daffodils." If it worked for one yellow flower, it could work for another. Melancholy, yes, but with hope for some sort of future... as least for her progeny.
