The Last Man On Earth

Seems that the world
has abandoned him
   The last man on
earth
   lives in a wasteland
He hopes
of finding others
He lives by a spring
   Washes himself in
the moving water
Lonely, he seeks comfort
The last man on earth
       breathes in the humid
atmosphere
   Hoping for companionship
He looks about
for any sign of life
   All his friends, lovers and
         compatriots
   have been felled in
the catastrophe
    Suddenly he sees a
cat move among the rocks
    He walks in that direction
He hopes that the cat will
     come near
In the gathering gloom
     His eyes meet with
felin eyes
Sizing each other up
      making contact
in "aworld they never made"

Matthew, I like the structure of uneven lines showcasing movement.....cool effect....a lonely beautiful poem!!!! thanks for comments! I'm not satisfied that I nailed the sound of the midnight birds with my last haiku line!!! but the emotion of it was magnetic!! : ) jim

Great poem...besides that the 'finding the cat' reminds me, oddly enough, of the movie 'cast away' i think...when the guy shares his life with the soccer ball Lol...anyways your words are great and this is a wonderful description of the last person in this world. awesome imagry. Peace. Boo

Except for the cat, this reminds me of a famous Twilight Zone episode. Interesting ending here and so love your imagination. Let me know how the book is when you get it! Love, Shar

WOW ... I wasn't expecting the last four lines ... smile ... wonderful write BUT a couple of things ... feline has an "e" at the end and you missed a space between "a" and "world" in the last line and then its perfect ... So, who does the soft pillowed mouth belong to? The Captive with the seductive eyes ... LOL ...

Very intriguing, Matthew. I've always wondered what it would be like to be the last one remaining, but I hope I never find out. Surely, we can all relate to the lonely man's desire for companionship and his excitement when he finds the cat. Great poem! Love, Carolyn
