The Last Light
The last light he saw was the light
From a clear blue morning sky.
His eyes gently let go of their hold of light.
He let go. He fell asleep...
His last light was the fulfillment of his wish
To be home when he had to leave.
Unseen in this illumination was his
Strong determination.
To check his speech I asked him
To repeat a phrase I said.
I asked again a short time later
And he added, "again".
I laughed.
He smiled weakly.
Then he closed his eyes...
Unseen, the illumination of his unfailing
Humour and positivity
Even in the hardest situations.
The bittersweetness of this moment
Somehow illuminates the unseen
Comfort this memory brings.
His cuddly yet firm hugs
Always anchored our bond.
He'd whisper softly, "special person"
I'd respond, "special Grandad"
To which he'd chuckle...
Unseen, the feeling of safety
And security
Illuminating his love and tenderness.
Unseen, my soul illuminating
When I think of his light
And the last light he offered.
Unseen and silent, my hearts
Rumbling groan at the yearning
For such presence as his.
And the sneaky tears,
Those capsules of sentiment,
That roll out to escape.
Those tears reflecting the
Illumination of the admiration
I feel for him.
The last light that radiated from his soul
Now rests like a precious jewel on
The cushion of my heart.
The transference was made
In that moment
When his eyes let go
Of their hold on light
And he fell asleep.
The final lasting light
Unseen
Is how the remembrance
Of our loved ones
Goes on to influence
The shape of the people
We become.
