The Last Email to A Man I Love
"Sometimes when you lose, you win."
And sometimes,
unrequited love
teaches us more
about love, and ourselves.
McDonough,
sometimes it can be
one of the best things
in our life.
I had the worst year teaching,
and you never called
so I couldn't explain.
I sent you weird texts
because I would drink
a lot
and then message you,
upset,
because I couldn't speak to you
and you go cold.
You hibernate
in the winter,
communicatively speaking,
probably dead,
or dying
from a cancer
you wouldn't name for me.
(Don't forget
that I'm from Rochester,
New York,
and I'm feisty).
I am working
at one of the best
schools in my state,
now, and almost.
I am having
my poetry published
and I won
money for my work
(little lie
for poetic liberty).
I am also
very happy
in my life.
I completed my 28
marathons
on my own,
with no
training wheels.
The last one was
one morning
when I hopped out of bed
and decided to run
(no coffee,
run, instead).
I hope to reconnect
with you someday.
I care about you,
as I do everyone in my life
whom I chose
to care for
because I see the extraordinary
in them
and I love
very passionately.
I know that scares
the living hell
out of your conservative,
British soul.
I always scare away,
and/or attract men.
Most women
don't give me
the time of day
because I am
(obviously, he he)
a beautiful goddess.
You are charming,
intelligent
and witty.
It is okay
to be loved
by a young woman,
McDonough.
Don't
over think
things,
and lose out
on how fun
this life
can be.
I'm running through the whole damn rainbow,
laughing and naked
with mistakes
and joy.
Sincerely,
me
