The joy of finding you
Now that you are no more,
I miss you all the more.
My mind wanders to the times
I failed to stop your tears nor grief—
My quiet guilt, my lifetime’s dread.
And then one day you visited my dreams
With all those tears of yours.
A few drops I gave to the garden beds,
Falling gently on the blossoming buds,
Which, by the morning, sparkled in the sun.
A dying campfire on the ridge
Caught a stray bead of your lamenting tears,
And lo, instead of sizzling out,
The embers flared into a brilliant indigo,
Guiding a lost traveller home through the dark.
Like wildfire did the rumour spread.
Oceans and seas and quiet bays
Sensing a shared, salty kinship,
Cradled your tears in silver shells,
Where they transformed to pearly gems
All across the wide world.
Deep in the sun-baked canyons,
Where rain had fallen not for centuries,
Your tears seeped into the cracked clay.
The sky, unable to hold the sudden moisture,
Spilled them across the immense space,
Where they now twinkle as stars through the night.
Nature’s painter that quietly watched all this,
Mixed your tears with his watercolour tray.
The canvas absorbed all sorrows
By bleeding out shades of the blue,
The bright and luminous shades
Whilst made passersby smile with joy.
My grief, born of your absence,
Feels suddenly lightened,
For look my dear -- you are everywhere.
It brings to mind the words of Ruskin Bond:
What mysterious thing be this happiness
That lies somewhere between
Too little and too much!
All our life we were caught by this twain,
But your tears have now shown the way
Wherein lies long-held grief of missing you,
Here’s the breathtaking joy of finding you
Everywhere in the universe.
