I run down the steps as the train pulls in It seems I'm right on time The doors open, I take a seat, my journey begins As the doors close I hear them chime The New York subway travels far and wide I remember when a token was your ticket to ride The old iron horse keeps chugging along Beneath cars and buses and the city's throng New York subway has been around since way back when The first one was built in 1904 it only cost a nickel to ride it then And the masses rode it more and more But when it comes to subway history London leads the way Opening its first subway in 1863 Powered by the steam engine back in the day The conductor announces the next stop, and it's mine As the train pulls in I see the sign And I know it won't be long Before I'm above ground to join the city's throng! 10-23-2021 Railroads, A Historical Glance Back Poetry Contest Sponsor: BJ Legros Kelley

Joseph, congratulations on your very high placement of your poem in the poetry contest 'Railroads, A Historical Glance Back'. We (myself and those who help me in judging my contests) very much enjoyed your poem 'The Iron Horse'. I have never been on a subway train, though a few of my children have had the thrilling opportunity to do so! Thank you so much for being a wonderful part of this contest and for your contribution! Again, congratulations! ~BJ

I have ridden both when younger and it is the fastest way to get around the city. My knees don’t like the stairs these days unless there are escalators. Tokens were a dime in New York when I first rode the subway. I enjoyed this piece which had me going back in time. Blessings xxoo

Love it Joseph. Anything trains draws me in. Loved the history too. Good luck in the contest. Here's a fun fact from the London Underground..Of the 270 stations on the system, St John's Wood is the only station name that doesn't contain any letters from the word Mackerel...It's true! Cheers - Gary

Thank you Gary, an interesting piece of info, here is one, The NY subway trains got AC in 1967, where as the London trains got AC in 2009!

We are able to travel to so many different places and in so many different ways. I find that so amazing. Just love the title of your poem and the message within. Many wonderful blessings to you, my dear friend. :) Brandy

I was never a city person, other than a fun visit occasionally. But you have brought me right there and taught me some things too. Well done Joseph :)

Awesome poem, Joseph--a tribute to London and NY subway systems. You took me back in time--for a while I was in London and took the underground to work. And took the NY subway as well while I worked there for a short time.
