Notes About The Poem

The Immigrant

Will ultimately acquire a resentful attitude.  Adrift, things will be sought all through the house.  The travel guide and short visas to Crouse  My passport, birth certificate, and mood The only thing that drew you away was sadness.  This was the reason for your original departure.  My worst kept secret: my puffy eyes; no future.  Immigrants may stay in the black or lose gladness. Each of us has dreams that we held from life.  It is hoped that the situation will improve soon.  Papers at the gates incite you to curse the moon.  Our previous dress code was snatched by strife. We were promptly given jobs as dishwashers.  Or, you may work in a field for a few pence an hour.  The office was happy to provide a temporary bower.  Poor whites and blacks band together like monsters. We wanted to get rid of meaningless platitude. from local dictators who endanger our safety.  Our blue-suited attacks still decked in blood paisley.  As they see fit, they chose us to be screwed.   Swing their clubs and fire their weapons as wished. The same for me. We are self-centered and ruthless.  Doctors don't care since we're sullied and worthless.  Our situation has not improved. Instead, swished.

Immigrants suffer much. They are never treated on par with the natives. You have dealt with their problems with empathy, dear friend and have spoken for the voiceless.

We are a land of immigrants. Sadly some forget having settled happily. You give them a voice in this poem my friend.

There is little compassion for immigrants these days, We do not allow such persons in Malta though they prefer to go to Italy. So many drown at sea.

I'm an emergency department nurse. Once took care of a 16-year old girl, field laborer from Mexico, 100+ degrees outside. No shade, no rest. She collapsed with heat stroke. Pregnant. Lost the baby. She almost didn't make it. Your poem is sadly true. Horribly true.
