The Horse

Why does the brown mare stand just so, her head over the wire fence but gazing at nothing? Her tail flicks, ears prick. Beyond the wire a group of laughing children run past, ignoring the horse. Wet eyes momentarily clear then cloud over again. Why does the brown mare stand just so gazing at nothing?
