Notes About The Poem

Today in Australia it is the 25th April our ANZAC Day, where we commemorate and remember those brave soldier who went to the First World War and to those who landed in Gallopili on 25th April 1915 with the aim of capturing the Gallipoli Peninsular. However as the Austraslian and NewZealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed, the Turkish soldiers we in readiness, and many of the ANZAC's were killed trying to land. The other who made it lived in rat infested, filthty dug out trenches, for a total of 8 months, before a 'Stalemate' was agreed to by both sides. Thousands of men were killed on both sides. Today, in Australia and New Zealand we have a day of remembrance to honour all those who go to war.

I write a poem every year as my way of acknowledging this day

Lest We Forget

The Highest Price

Australian and New Zealand Army Corps
Our ANZAC soldiers from the First World War.
Landed at Gallipoli on April Twenty-Five, 
1915 was the year, at dawn when they arrived.

Their task to storm the beach, was thwarted by the Turks
Who laid in wait with loaded guns, and then they went berserk.
Before the ANZACS reached the shore, many had been killed
Others made it onto land, but to the bone were chilled.

Anzac Cove became their base, in dug out trenches lived
In mud and squalor, rats, and filth, but never would give in.
For months on end, fought tooth and nail, their goal to just survive
And for each other every day, prayed they would stay alive.

Eight months their campaign met a stalemate, neither side won out
Both sides of war lost many men; a truce then came about.
Evacuations sent them home, though weary, filled with pride
Because they knew each soldier there, stood proudly side by side.

And as the ANZAC legends grow, we will remember them
We bow our heads, in silent prayer, for all those brave dear men.
The Last Post then reminds us all, of what was sacrificed
So, we can live in peace because, they paid the highest price.

Christine Watts May 4, 2026 at 6:14 AM Hi Andrea I always write a poem for Anzac Day and have quite a few now I always celebrate ANZAC day even as a child I went to the morning service and it is probably to most revered day in Australia and New Zealand I am pleased you were able to learn a little bit of history through my words and I may consider having my poems published I have a couple in my poetry book 'Quintessential Christine' ( published in Australia in 2023) Cheers Chris xx
