The Heartbeat of Time

I can hear it
The sound of an unseen creature
Its heart beats once a second
It taunts me
It knows that I am here
Aware of its being
I know that it waits for me
I avoid sleep for fear it will come
It gets louder when I close my eyes
Maybe it’s all in my mind?
One night when I sleep
It will come and watch me
Measuring me for its plans
Trying to decide if I am ready
If I am it will know
The sounds that echoed in my ears
The heartbeat of the creature will stop
I will be gone
My soul stolen by something I couldn’t see
And time will have won again
